Do you need a coach to be successful?

No, but it will really help you if you are willing to listen and trust and want to grow and be more successful.

One of the benefits of my job is coaching start-up entrepreneurs and small business owners.

It is rewarding for them, hopefully, as they see how to improve their productivity, their business results, their management of themselves and others and to hear things others usually won’t or can’t tell them (or perhaps they just will not listen).

It is rewarding for me as I get to meet people brave enough to start their own company who are invariably interesting, excited about their company and the opportunities and risks, and I get to travel with them, at least for a period of time, on their road to greater success.

It is very rare to meet a young entrepreneur or executive who has developed all the skills necessary to run a business optimally. More common is that they excel in one or more areas, sales, marketing or design, for example, but are weaker in others, like finance, cash management or perhaps people management.

The more experienced executive can also benefit from being challenged by a coach to look at themselves and their company from a different perspective and to understand how they can improve. Even experienced owners sometimes know deep down what needs to be done but they need help to bring that into the open, develop a plan, and validation, support and encouragement to implement the plan.

A couple of years ago I worked with an owner focused exclusively on customers and sales and helped them understand the importance of not only cash management and business planning, but also the need to face the tough people decisions directly, to understand them honestly, to build a plan and then implement it, creating a suddenly much healthier and more stable environment for the employees and the owner to grow and prosper. Perhaps they could have got there without coaching, but for certain it would have taken a lot longer and the business could have failed in the meantime.

Recently I have been helping an entrepreneur, in his first start-up with an amazing rhythm based idea designed to help unique learners with adaptive challenges. This is a lot of fun.
We met at a Special Olympics fund raiser. His past includes coaching basketball for special needs kids, so he has the experience and understanding to put together this great product that we hope will help many people.
But even with a great product we sometimes need a push and a reality check. After the first coaching session he developed a plan, set deadlines and immediately moved to implement the plan. He was motivated and had a clear path and understanding of what needed to be done.

I have a strong feeling this will be a successful company (and yes he had to define what success meant to him) and if not then he can be very happy that he gave it his very best shot.

And I would define success as giving your best in any given circumstance and being satisfied you did your honest best to make it work, no matter the final outcome. If this is your attitude then success, however you define it,  will soon appear. With or without a coach.
